So how was your sabbatical?

David playing his mandolin for funI just finished my one-month sabbatical. It was great, but let me be more specific:

We are studying the Westminster Shorter Catechism questions in my Sunday School class, and I could really identify with the first one, which is: “What is the chief end of man?” (Answer is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.) I was trying to do the first part (glorify) without the second part (enjoy).

A takeaway from the sabbatical is to look for ways to enjoy God more under the parameters of obedience and service to Him. Certainly playing around at home on a mandolin is enjoyable, though I don’t plan to make it a career!

I have some other ideas to explore and think through. Knowing I may not be able to work through all the ideas, it was fabulous just to start on them. My friend Steve Brown in The Navigators gave me some parameters and materials that their staff members use, and it was really helpful.
