The Cru15 conference in July was very challenging. In the context of taking the good news around the world were several sessions about how Cru needs to be moving more quickly toward ethnic diversity. With that was an acknowledging of the failures Cru and the “majority culture” church have made to treat people of other (non-white) ethnicities well. It was done in love with the hope that things could get better.
I came away with some general ways to engage other cultures better:
1. Value the effort it takes to engage in racial reconciliation.
2. Protest when other ethnic groups are treated unfairly.
3. Don’t abuse the position of privilege that your ethnicity gives you.
4. Stick with your partnership with another group even when things get difficult.
This is not the final list. We are still reviewing the sessions and trying to process all that we heard. Many are still available at https://cru15.cru.org/archive/index.htm .
