Security Tip: Use a VPN

In order to protect your computer or mobile device while on a wireless network, our company recommends that we use a VPN (Virtual Private Network). A VPN will slow down hackers trying to view and steal your personal data. In preparation for helping run an overseas conference in January, we were asked to help the conferees install and use a VPN the entire time they were there. Even in a restaurant or hotel in the US, a VPN is recommended because wi-fi connections with a weak or nonexistent password are not safe.

This is not a full description of which VPN to use, but to be useful it should have:

— Connections (cities) near where you need them
— Modern security protocols (right now, OpenVPN is one of the newest protocols that is also affordable)
— Some assurance it does not save the data that runs through it. Does it save the logs?

A lot comes down to you feeling like you can trust the VPN company to keep your data and web activity safe. With the COVID-19 quarantines, most of us are not traveling. But now is the time to figure out what you will need when you are able to go out again.
